Description: Live Oak Leaf Litter for Bioactive, Terrarium & Vivarium Enclosures Leaf litter is essential in a naturalistic and/or bioactive terrarium. These leaves provide necessary surface area for beneficial bacterial and fungal process to take hold as well as provide a food source for your clean up crew. Many small animals such as dart frogs, snakes and micro geckos will use it blend in or for security. In your terrarium, it is recommended to have leaves thoroughly mixed with your substrate. As your leaf litter degrades you will need to add in more leaves as your tank progresses. Leaf litter refers to a layer of dead leaves on the floor of the vivarium and provides visual barriers and places to hide for the vivarium inhabitants. It also gradually breaks down, adding nutrients to the substrate, and sustaining healthy populations of microfauna, such as springtails and isopods, that not only provide a source of food for many vivarium inhabitants, but also aid in keeping the vivarium clean. As the leaves break down we recommend adding a new layer to keep the process going. Harvested and hand collected in the USA (on my personal Texas Property) and is guaranteed to be free of pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. Each bag is hand sorted removing most of all sticks and acorns. While our leaf litter is clean and safe we still recommend to take the following steps prior to introducing into your terrarium, if you feel the necessity. How to prepare your leaf litter: 1) Preheat the oven to 140 Degrees F and bake for about 20 minutes. -OR-2) Boil entire contents of bag for 10 minutes. NOTE: None of our products are meant for human consumption.
