Description: I have here for sale a 2-volume book set entitled THE SACRED THEORY OF THE EARTH containing an Account of the Original of the Earth, and of all the General Changes which it hath already undergone, or is to undergo, till the Consummation of all Things by Thomas Burnet. This is a sixth edition published by J Hooke, London in 1726. The first volume contains the first two Books concerning the Deluge and Dissolution of the Earth; and the second volume contains the last two Books Concerning the Burning of the World and the New Heavens and New Earth. Vol I has 12 b/w plates (including a frontispiece portrait of the author and an illustrated title page) and Vol II has 1. At the back of Vol II there are several other publications - A Review of the Sacred Theory of the Earth and of its Proofs: Especially in Reference to Scripture; An Answer to the Exceptions made by Mr Erasmus Warren against the Sacred Theory of the Earth (fourth edition) published by J Hooke, in 1726 also; A Short Consideration of Mr Erasmus Warren's Defence of his Exceptions against the Theory of the Earth in a letter to a friend; Reflections upon the Theory of the Earth occasion'd by a Late Examination of it in a Letter to a Friend, also by J Hooke in 1726. Burnet's best known work, for sale here, is his Telluris Theoria Sacra, or Sacred Theory of the Earth. The first part was published in 1681 in Latin, and in 1684 in English translation; the second part appeared in 1689 (1690 in English). It was a speculative cosmogony, in which Burnet suggested a hollow earth with most of the water inside until Noah's Flood, at which time mountains and oceans appeared. He calculated the amount of water on Earth's surface, stating there was not enough to account for the Flood. Burnet was to some extent influenced by Descartes who had written on the creation of the earth in Principia philosophiae (1644), and was criticised on those grounds by Roger North. The heterodox views of Isaac La Peyrère included the idea that the Flood was not universal; Burnet's theory was at least in part intended to answer him on that point. Bound in full calf leather hardboards with a gilt border. 5 raised bands to the spines. Title blocks are missing so the title has been handwritten in ink which is a bit faded now. Spines rubbed as are board edges and joints. All boards firm. One or two isolated foxing spots but clean throughout. Vol I - 456 pages, Vol II - 568 pages, 21 cm x 13 cm.
