Shaw & F.Nodder Biography of the Artist George Shaw (10th December 1751 ? 22Th July 1813) was born in Bierton, Buckingamshire, and received his early education at Magdalen Hall in Oxford. In 1781 Shaw became the Keeper of the Department of Natural History at the British Museum, co-founder of the Linnean Society. In 1789 was elected fellow of the Royal Society. Between 1790 and 1813 ? with F.P. Nodder as illustrator ? Shaw published the ?The Naturalist's Miscellany? an extensive compendium of the birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, fishes, crustacean and sea marine life - that were new to science - discovered and described by naturalists and explorers in and around Australia and New Zealand during Eighteenth Century expedictions. Shaw was the first scientist to examine the duck-billed platypus when a specimen was brought to him from Captain John Hunter's Australian expedition. In 1794 Shaw also published ?Zoology of New Holland?, the first English description of many other Australian animals and plants. Frederick Polydore Nodder (1770 - c 1800) was a British natural history artist who illustrated both plants and animals. He was a so talented botanical artist and engraver that was appointed 'Botanical painter' to her Majesty Queen Charlotte. Very Famous and with a solid reputation as painter he was contracted by Sir Joseph Banks to convert most of Sydney Parkinson?s Australian plant sketches into paintings and related copper plates: Banks? monumental Florilegium was based mainly on Nodder?s artworks. ?The Naturalist's Miscellany? is Nodder?s most extensive and important artwork: the images were highly refined, and executed with the most scrupulous Adherence to Nature. Description of the work. We are please to present a selection of spectacular hand-colored and refined copper plates form an important and beautifully-illustrated scientific artwork. ?The Naturalist's Miscellany? (1789-1813) was published in 287 monthly parts over some 24 years and was organized to be bound in a potential 24 volumes. It describes zoological subjects, many new to science, and native to the South Pacific and Australia. "A remarkable serial" (Wood), a monumental work on Natural History. As the original Prospectus stated: "The Plates [are] printed on the best paper ... executed with the most scrupulous Adherence to Nature, and ... coloured with the utmost Precision and Exactness".
