It was the first English periodical to offer reviews, and was founded by Ralph Griffiths. Contributors include people such as Oliver Goldsmith, Charles Burney, Anna Letitia Barbauld, Tobias Smollett, and Elizabeth Moody. Its main competitor was 'The Critical Review', which was founded in 1756 by Tobias Smollett. This periodical was the first successful literary magazine in London, being an instant success upon its first publication, and was read by the likes of Benjamin Franklin.
