1804 Explanation of the survival of the Gothic in Naples and Arezzo German and L

Description: Johann Christian Zahn was a Lutheran pastor who wrote on a variety of biblical topics. This is a monograph exploring the remnants of the Gothic language in Naples and Arezzo. Written in German and Latin, this is a precursor to his later work on “Diatessaron” which looked at the translation and structure of certain verses as well as the coherence of the books of the Bible. This is based, as the title implies, on the remnants of a translation of the Bible by Wulfila, a Visigoth. The book itself is in excellent condition. There is writing inside the front—what looks like names and across from this on free endpaper, another name with what appears to be a date? And reference to several page number. There is some foxing towards the back but very light. Beautiful paper. This would be an intriguing reference work for anyone working with the Gothic Bible or language. Has sections in German and some Latin where Zahn re-translated from other versions. Stamped inside “Bibliothek Wolfenbuttel” across from dedication page. Has photographic card from Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenputtel.Very Good Condition:small octavo (7 3/4” X 4 3/4”): publishers’ hardboard with crack at upper front hinge and bottom back hinge: looks like there was writing or a label of some sort on the spine but it has worn away: spotting on the boards: slight bends to the corners: foxing on spares in back: writing inside front, on facing page and on back of free spare across from title page as well as stamp across from dedication page: foxing, most at rear: “Bersuch einer Erlauterung der Gothicschen Sprachuberreste In Neapolitan und Urezzo also Eisner Einlabungsschrift und Beilage sum Ulfilas”: Johann Christian Zahn: Braunschweig: 1804.
