Description: 1828 Small Date Bust Dime Counterstamped "AARON . PRATT MERIDEN CON". See the pics. Although coins were engraved and/or counterstamped to announce a birth, marriage, death or to profess ones love for another, most counterstamped coins with names were created to advertise that person’s business. The “AARON PRATT” counterstamp most likely falls into the latter category - In the December 9, 1833 Hartford Connecticut Courant, Aaron Pratt was listed as a subscriber, “having formed a connexion in the business of Manufacturing Combs, &c, in the Town of Meriden… under the firm of Julius Pratt & Co.”. - On October 28, 1840, he and seven other assignees were granted U. S. Patent 1,837; a “Machine for planing and forming ivory for combs”. - In the July 9, 1855 Connecticut Courant, he was listed as a 2.25% stock holder in the newly formed Meriden Cutlery Company. This company was formed “"to manufacture, sell and deal in all kinds of Table Cutlery and other Cutlery". [Note: the Meriden Cutlery Company operated from 1855 to 1918, when Landers, Frary & Clark purchased it. Meriden Cutlery Company products were discontinued in 1924. - In the October 17, 1863 New Haven Daily Palladium, he was listed as an 8% stock holder in the newly formed Pratt, Read & Company. This company was formed “to manufacture, sell and deal in all kinds of Ivory, Shell, Horn, Bone, Rubber, Wood and other Combs, all kinds of Piano and Melodeon Ivory, and other articles made in whole or in part of Ivory, Shell, Horn, Bone, India Rubber, Gutta Percha, Compisition, Wood or Metal”. - In “The Pratt Family: Or the Descendants of Lieut. William Pratt, One of the First Settlers of Hartford and Saybrook” by Rev. F. W. Chapman, 1864, Aaron Pratt was identified as a coach-maker. - In both the 1850 and 1860 U. S. Census, Aaron Pratt identified his occupation as a Manufacturer. Arron Pratt counterstamps are very scarce, and are usually seen on Seated coins that are counterstamped "AARON . PRATT". This is the only Aaron Pratt counterstamp that I have seen on a Bust coin that is counterstamped "AARON . PRATT MERIDEN CON". RARE !!!
