Description: This 1838 stampless folded cover (no contents) was sent from White Sulphur Springs VA (present day Greenbrier County West Virginia) to a Chiswell Dabney in Lynchburg VA. The FC has a light but complete strike of the White Sulphur Springs VA red CDS along with the manuscript free frank of US Congressman Seaton Grantland. Grantland was born in New Kent County Virginia in 1782. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in Milledgeville Georgia. He served in the House of Representatives from 1835 to 1839. Grantland owned a plantation in Milledgeville GA (Baldwin County) and according to the 1850 census he owned 89 slaves. He died in Milledgeville GA during the Civil War in 1864 and is buried in the Memory Hill Cemetery there. Overall condition is about VF (clear vertical file fold).
