Description: Beautiful Silver Coin 1839 AD 1255 AH Year 1 Cairo Egypt 20 Para Ottoman Sultan Abdul Majid For your Egyptian Coin Collection-EGC791 Details Description: A beautiful small extremely fine to about uncirculated silver coin. This Egyptian coin, which is dated 1255 AH year 1 of Sultan Abdul Majid’s reign is small and made of 0.833 silver. The coin was struck in Egypt while under Ottoman Rule. It is a 20 para or half a Qirsh silver coin. This beautiful silver coin depicts the tughra of Abdul Majid (the Ottoman Sultan, in Turkey, at the time) on the obverse with a rose to its right and denomination below it. The reverse has the Legend "Duribah Fee Misr 1255" or struck in Misr, which is Fustat on the outskirts of current day Cairo the capital of Egypt, and shows that it was struck in the 1st year of Abdul Mejid's reign, translating to 1839. The year 1255 AH (1839 AD) is the year when Abdul Aziz became sultan. The coin has great eye appeal and looks great. It is KM 227, weighs ~0.6 gram and is ~15 mm. Please carefully view scan as it is part and parcel of our description. Date: 1839. Mint: Misr or Fustat on the outskirts of Cairo the current capital of Egypt. Size and weight: This is a 20 para or half a Qirsh measures about 15 mm and weighs about 0.6 grams. References: It is KM #227. Condition: I would grade this coin as extremely fine to about uncirculated with all the details being very well preserved and having nice eye appeal. The coin has some soiling, minimum wear to the highest points, and minor strike weakness along the edge at 2-3 o'clock. It is much better than the photos suggest. It does have minor scratches, and wear commensurate with its age and circulated status. A very nice example of this rather scarce coin. Coins of such low denomination are very difficult to find on such high grade since they heavily circulated and many of the them were melted for the value of the metal. A nice example which would make a nice addition to your collection. Please see photo for additional condition information.
