Description: A very attractive jug with a raised relief on the body depicting an illustration of characters jousting at the Eglington Tornament 1839. This is perhaps one of the most iconic of the Victorian moulded jugs, the Eglinton Tournament jug by William Ridgway & Sons Co. It has finely detailed moulding of jousting knights and a band of fruiting vines with gothic arches around the rim. The jug celebrates the Eglinton Tournament of 1839 which had huge notoriety in its time and was attended by the rich and famous including Louis Napoleon (later to become Emporer of France). The tournament had mixed success and suffered from heavy rain (of course). It did however inspire many artworks and products to cash in on the event including Ridgway's design here. This example is in stoneware and had impressed marks to the base including the date of 1840. Condition~ In excellent condition with no chips cracks or crazing. There are some original firing flaws to the moulding which are part of the antique authenticity of the piece not damages.
