In August, 1838, Roberts travelled to Alexandria, Egypt, to start his artistic, topographical work throughout the Holy Land and the Middle East. He travelled extensively in the region for several years, living in Cairo, moving up the Nile River to Nubia while taking notes for his journal, and visiting and sketching the many mosques, monuments and other unique attributes he witnessed during his travels. After returning to England, Roberts published the results of his travels in six large folio volumes. Given the great popularity and success of the folio volumes, Day & Son agreed to publish the quarto edition in 1856. This fine duotone lithograph produced from David Roberts' late 1830s sketch is from the 1856 edition, and is an authentic 165+ year-old antiquarian print!
