Description: 1861 Springfield lock plate and hammer found on the Spotsylvania Battlefield. The main spring that brought the hammer down is intact, the rifle was probably damaged and just left on the battlefield. Many of the rifle parts found on the battlefields were once still on the wood stocks of damaged weapons. The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was the second major battle in Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign of the Civil War. Following the bloody but inconclusive Battle of the Wilderness, Grant's army disengaged from General Robert E. Lee's army and moved to the southeast. Elements of Lee's army beat the Union army to the critical crossroads of Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, and began entrenching. Fighting occurred on and off from May 8 through May 21, 1864. The artifact comes as shown. It measures 5 1/2”. Cleaned and treated. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated.
