Description: A SEMINAL WORK BY HORACE GREELEY ON THE EVENTS IN AMERICAN HISTORY WHICH LED UP TO AND CAUSED THE CIVIL WAR, AND THEN A REPORT ON THE CIVIL WAR ITSELF, IN A BEAUTIFUL 2 VOL LEATHER SET! The two volume set is fully titled and subtitled, "The American Conflict: A History of the Great Rebellion in the United States of America, 1860-'64: Its Causes, Incidents, and Result: Intended to Exhibit Especially its Moral and Political Phases, with the Drift and Progress of American Opinion Respecting Human Slavery, from 1776 to the Close of the War for the Union" Volume 1 is specific to the years 1776- 1862, and Volume 2 is from 1862-1865. Volume 1 has a copyright date of 1864 and the title page has a date of 1865, so it is an early printing, while Volume 2 has the same copyright and title page date, 1866, so I assume it is a First Edition. Both volumes were published by O.D. Case & Company of Hartford, CT. Also, the copyright page of both books has a printer identification of Case, Lockwood & Company, also in Hartford, CT. The FULL LEATHER BOARDS have been professionally refurbished and sealed to properly see the sheen and the suppleness of the original leather. The refurbishing included attachment of a replacement small piece of leather to the top of the spine of Volume 1, and also the firming up of the partial detachment of the front boards of both Volumes. Now the boards are uniform, clean and shiny, and solidly attached - see listing photos. Page edges are uniform on three sides to a light brown/pink, endpapers are brown, both books are very solidly bound, clean with no interior marks, and a minimal amount of foxing, mainly at the engraved plates and the tissue protective papers at these plates. Volume 1 has 648 pages, 26 engraved plates and maps, ending with an index. Volume 2 has 782 pages, 11 engraved plates, 55 engraved illustrations and maps in the text, also ending in an index. A SUPERB COPY OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK BY HORACE GREELEY. A brief comment on this 2-Vol set from another listing: "A great early history of the Civil War by the great newspaper man, Horace Greeley. A "fair and certainly honest history of the events" according to Sabin. In "his version of the entire history of the nation from 1776 to the second year of the Civil War. The second analyzes the final three years of the war and includes substantial material on emancipation and the crushing of the rebellion...Greeley traces the seeds of the war and includes a large cache of public documents and speeches to make his case. Failed compromise is the predominating theme... Composed during the war, the work is particularly notable for the presentation of predictions about the years to come, particularly regarding the slavery question" (Eicher 741 writing of Vol. 1)." SL
