Description: This is Vol.1, No.9 of Father Abraham published July31,1868 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was a weekly newspaper published for the presidential campaign of Ulysses S. Grant. Under the heading "Father Abraham" is a small engraving of Lincoln's profile and a quote from his "with malice towards none" speech. The first page has a campaign song for Grant, a quote from a London newspaper praising his character and another noting that he rose through the ranks in his military career and did as he was ordered without complaint. Another article defends for the much maligned "carpetbaggers". There are also articles vigorously condemning the Democratic opponents Seymour and Blair. The back page has several political cartoons and a column written in Pennsylvania Dutch. Ads mostly on page 3, include one for flags and fireworks for the campaign and July 4th, a political manual and portraits of Grant and Colfax. After Grant won the election, the paper continued as a weekly and ceased publication in 1873. This paper has four 13 1/2 by 20 1/4 inch pages There's some foxing on the back page, but the paper is in good condition - much higher quality than the usual newsprint. A fascinating contemporary look at one side of a very contentious election!
