Head of spine lacking - binding exposed. Tail of spine collapsed & chipping. Gilt lettering & illustrations bright and clean. Rear hinge split - cloth spine separating from binding. Top edge gilt. Ex-library sticker to tail of spine. Both gutters split, binding mesh exposed. Front end-page, to title page are detached from binding (including frontispiece). Ex-library plate on front paste-down: New York State Library, Albany. Previous ownership signature at top of front fly-leaf. Crayon annotations in red and blue throughout text-block. Light toning present. Small water dampness staining to bottom corner of text-block. Binding is very loose - almost broken. Please see photos. Johann Ludwig Heinrich Julius Schliemann (1822-1890) was a German businessman and pioneer in the field of archaeology. He was an advocate of the historicity of places mentioned in the works of Homer and an archaeological excavator of Hisarlik, now presumed to be the site of Troy. His works lent weight to the idea that Homer's Iliad reflects historical events.
