Description: English Readers: The High School Series Book VI, written and compiled for the Department of Education by Walter Dening. Published in Tokyo in 1887, this 259 page hardcover is a collection of stories and essays, by English authors (J. H. Gubbins, Edward S. Morse, Jonathan Swift, W. Anderson, T. A. Purcell, W. C. Auston et al.), prepared by Mr. Dening, an English teacher in Japan. The English stories are followed by a couple of pages of Japanese. There's a publisher's sticker/stamp on a preliminary page. Enclosed are fragments of a Japanese newspaper, plus a postcard sized picture of sailing boats with Mt. Fuji in the back ground. The newspaper clippings are very worn and the picture has creases and small chips. The book is in very good condition. The gilt emblem in front is still bright and distinct. Board corners are rubbed through, spine ends chipped. Foxing of the endpapers, but very little inside. Pages are unmarked and securely bound. Unusual schoolbook, probably intended for Japanese high school students. Shipping is FREE in the USA, or contact me for an international quote. Thanks for looking!
