Description: A 1892 Envelope Fragment Saved from Wreck of S. S. Eider - salvaged Shipwreck Mail The German steamer "Eider" left New York with this envelope portion that had been mailed in Philadelphia and routed to New York for a journey to London. It became stuck near Isle of Wight on January 31, 1892. Holes in the ship flooded the mail compartment. All the mail was soaked, including this one. Small card accompanies that describes all this. The post office marked the obverse with the boxed notation. The addressee apparently got this, but the edges were too soaked to save, so this fragment was cut to what was able to be preserved.
