Description: 1897 White Metal Pin, St. Louis, Mo. Bundes Turnfest. 1 7/16" wide and 2 3/4" tall. Metal appears to be aluminum. The hanger bar has the letters "FFST," which stand for the German words "Frisch, Fromm, Stark & Treu," and represents the basic principles of the Turner Movement: "Healthy, Upright, Strong & True." The first two letters and the second two letters are on either side of a profile portrait of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, the German founder of the Turner Movement. The Turner Movement hThe ad Turnfests, which were gymnastic competitions held by German American gymnastic clubs called turnvereins. In 1848 the first Turnverein was established in Cincinnati, Ohio. The first Turner organization in St. Louis was organized in 1850 and called the St. Louis Turnverein. The South St. Louis Turnverein was organized in 1864 and the North in 1870. The Concordia Turnverein was organized in 1874 by neighbors in the Concordia Park and Arsenal district. The National Turner Headquarters were located in St.Louis from 1878-1897. The suspended medal has the words, "27th Bundes - Turnfest" around the top edge of the front. Bundes Turnfest translates to Federal Gymnastics Festival. Around the bottom edge are the words, "St.Louis, Mai - 1897". The central device is an image of a sword and torch crossed over a laurel wreath. Above the crossed torch and sword is an owl. Below are the letters, "N.A.T.B." which stand for Nord-Amerikanischen Turnerbundes, North American Gymnastic Union. At the very bottom is a shield with stars and stripes. On the reverse is the manufacturer's name, Trebus & Steiner St. Louis. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, (born Aug. 11, 1778, Lanz, Brandburg, Prussia—died Oct. 15, 1852, Freyburg an der Unstrut, Prussian Saxony), the German “father of gymnastics” who founded the turnverein (gymnastics club) movement in Germany. In 1809 he settled in Berlin, where he held several teaching positions at secondary schools. There he began a program of outdoor physical exercise for students. He invented the parallel bars, the rings, the balance beam, the horse, and the horizontal bar,which became standard equipment for gymnastics.
