Description: High-end, Originally Brilliant Rarity! 1924 Peace Dollar VAM-1AW "Pitted Obverse #7" Rarity-6 (not on slab) NGC / CAC MS64 A beautiful high-end 64, with decidedly "gemmy" eye appeal. This is no ordinary 1924 Peace dollar. Known as "VAM-1AW Pitted Obverse #7," the entire obverse die was textured like alligator skin, due to an acid rinse gone wrong. Additionally, an extreme die clash engulfs the obverse, with rays coming out from behind Liberty's bust on both sides of her head, including spikes on her forehead and out of her mouth. She looks like a buck-toothed unicorn. Curiously, no die clashing shows on the reverse of this die variety, indicating that the reverse die was switched out after the clashing. Usually, it is the obverse die that is replaced after severe damage, and the reverse dies were seldom cared about. Also of note is an the early die state, crisply raised lettering and design elements, with none of the fading of the letters typically seen on over-used, worn out Peace dollar dies. Additionally, the surfaces (those that are not acid etched) show a fresh, fine satin and bold lathe lines, made by the final finishing of the die face. Lathe lines often appear on early die states of 1920s to 1950s coinage. On middle and later die states, these features are typically erased by die frosting. The extreme obverse damage, the early die state, and the pronounced rarity of this dramatic issue point to the notion that this die was quickly taken out of service, and that relatively few coins were struck from the marriage. That would expalin its R-6 rarity. Just discovered in 2010. This die marriage is not currently recognized by the grading services, however, it is easy to find on the VAMWorld site.RETURN POLICY!
