THIS POSTER ADVERTISES THE 1927 CHICAGO RODEO HELD AT SOLDIER FIELD - WHICH BROUGHT WESTERN COWBOY ENTERTAINMENT TO THE CENTRAL US! YEE-HA! The Chicagoan was an American magazine modeled after the New Yorker published from June 1926 until April 1935. Focusing on the cultural life of the city of Chicago, each issue of the Chicagoan contained art, music, and drama reviews, profiles of personalities and institutions, commentaries on the local scene, and editorials, along with cartoons and original art. The magazine aimed to portray the city as a cultural hub and counter its image as a place of violence and vice. ARTIST: Otto Brennemann (1894-1951) Otto Brennemann, a German-born World War I hero with a background in auto design. Otto was one of the New Deal WPA mural painters in Illinois, possibly in the Elmhurst University, at 135 Prospect St. A couple of his posters were in the Indiana State Library exhibit He may be the same Otto Brennemann that was indicted for sedition during World War II, but did not stand trial. Brennemann was a cartoon artist and developed a series of cartoons critical of President Roosevelt’s foreign policy prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor which led to his indictment. The cartoons were titled “History Repeats”, “The Answer to the Betrayal,” and “ America on the March.” Being anti administration was offense enough, and the courts were so corrupt (see Trial of Chicago 7, re 1968 riots) but realizing the prosecutor had no real evidence to prove sedition, Judge Laws declared a mistrial on December 7, 1944.
