Description: May 1928 COLUMBIA RECORDS "New Process" - original sales catalog - An original 1926 Columbia Records catalog featuring their latest recording releases; "Made the New Way - Electrically". Columbia Records was founded on January 15, 1889, having evolved from the American Graphophone Company, the successor to the Volta Graphophone Company. Columbia is the oldest surviving brand name in the recorded sound business, and was the second major company to produce records. Today, Columbia is one of Sony Music's four flagship record labels, alongside RCA Records, Arista Records, and Epic Records. This 20-page May edition of Columbia's monthly catalog of 1928 recording offerings features a cover photo of English pianist Myra Hess (1890-1965), best known for her performances of the works of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann. Interestingly, this catalog's cover mentions the Schubert Centennial - organized by Columbia Phonograph Company. Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was an Austrian composer who in his short lifetime left behind over 600 secular vocal works, seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, and a large body of piano and chamber music. Inside, record listings feature Columbia catalog numbers and pricing for each title. Sections include: Masterwork Series, Celebrity Series, Standard and Instrumental, A Special Record for Mother's Day, Dance Music, Vocal Numbers, Novelty Record, Familiar Tunes - Old & New, and Irish Records. Notable entries for this May 1928 edition include: Sir Dan Godfrey and the London Symphony Orchestra, the London String Quartet playing Schubert, Myra Hess, Eduard Moerike and the Orchestra of the State Opera House of Berlin, Selections from "La Boheme" and "March of the Toys" from "Babes in Toyland" by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, the California Ramblers, Ipana Troubadours, Clicquot Club Eskimos, Art Gillham The Whispering Pianist, Ruth Etting, "Ol' Man River" and "Can't help Lovin' Dat Man" by Aunt Jemima from "Show Boat", Charlie Parker, and Seamus O'Doherty. The final twelve pages detail every Columbia Records release issued from September 1927 to May 1928. This is a rare time capsule of mid-1920s recorded music notably including early performances from "Show Boat", "La Boheme", and "Babes inToyland". Size is 5" x 6.75", with expected overall age coloration to the front & back covers which are not loose, three small tears on the edge on the front cover as well as two small areas of unobtrusive staining to the cover photo (see photo) and three small areas of foxing on the back cover which do not effect the display potential or page turning, and the remaining interior pages are in excellent condition in this catalog that is almost a century old.
