Here is a very intriguing stamp with a history locked away out of sight. There isn’t reference anywhere in catalogue reference material nor online about the overprint of “M.W.B.”. This isn’t related to another office of the UK in another country. It’s not related to an actual pre-cancel. It’s believed that the overprint of “M.W.B.” is similar to perfins in that it’s from a business, or a wealthy individual, allowed by the UK Postal Service to “pre-cancel” the stamp so that it was harder to steal. The reason for this is because the gum is solid and unused on the backside of this stamp. Also, there is a penciled-in initial cancel. If the stamp was “pre-canceled” already, and never hinged, and never used, what’s the need for the initials to be penciled in? Maybe this stamp was about to be used, slipped and fell behind something, only to be discovered years later? Who knows? That’s the intriguing part of this stamp, and the many discussion points it will add to someone’s collection. Reference to other overprinted 2p stamps shows the $3 range. This has been priced accordingly. If you know what this is, and this stamp is grossly under priced, then it’s your gain. Postage is set to $0.58 without a tracking number. If you purchase multiple items, shipping will be combined and the difference will be refunded through eBay. Thank you for looking and check back often for more interesting items.
