This vintage photograph is offered for sale as a collectible item and conveys no transfer of copyright. 1937 Press Photo Cevilla Sallot Awarded Legion of Valor Medal in Boston Governor Charles Hurley of Massachusetts, (right) presenting the Army and Navy Legion of Valor medal to Cevilla Sallot of Erie, Pennsylvania, in a ceremony at the annual Legion of Honor Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, August 11. The 12-year-old girl was voted this years award by the Legion in recognition of her heroism in saving the lives of her brother, sister, and mother, overcome by gas in their Erie home, when a boiler exploded. Cevilla broke in the back door, dragged the unconscious forms of her brother and sister from the gas-filled home, and then aided her invalid mother to safety. She also received a $100 award from Kate Smith, Radio singer. Mayor Mansfield of Boston, is in the center background. Photo measures 7.75 x 10.5 inches. Photo Is dated 1937.
