General of the Army George Catlett Marshall, who was 66 years old on December 31, and had been in the army for 45 of those years, is the first career soldier ever to become Secretary of State. He succeeds James F. Byrnes, who resigned recently because of poor health. General Marshall was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the son of a manufacturer. In 1901 he was graduated as first captain of cadets at the Virginia Military Institute. His rise in the army was slow, but by the end of World War I he was aide-de-camp to General Pershing. Architect of the Allied victory over the Axis, key figure in the combined Chiefs of Staff which directed the effort, General Marshall had been known as a diplomatic soldier ever since his early lieutenant days. His first non-military assignment did not come, however, until early in 1946 when, having resigned as Chief of Staff, he went to China as President Truman's personal representative. This series of eight file photos shown General Marshall at various stages in his great career. Then a colonel, General George C. Marshall (right) is shown with General John A. Pershing, commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in World War I. Photo measures 7 x 9.25 inches. Photo Is dated 1947.
