THIS AUCTION IS FOR SOUVENIR OF THE 1950'S A&P SUPERMARKETS PROMO GIFT TO CUSTOMERS ADVERTISING HOME SEWING NEEDLE SET The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, better known as A&P, was an American chain of grocery stores that operated from 1859 to 2015. From 1915 through 1975, A&P was the largest grocery retailer in the United States (and, until 1965, the largest U.S. retailer of any kind. IMAGINE THOSE PRICES AT TODAY'S SUPERMARKETS!!21 CENTS A POUND PORK CHOPS!!!18 CENTS A POUND BACON!!! A&P was considered an American icon that, according to The Wall Street Journal, "was as well known as McDonald's or Google is today". At its peak in the 1940s, A&P captured 10% of total US grocery spending. Known for innovation, A&P improved consumer's nutritional habits by making available a vast assortment of food products at much lower costs. Until 1982, A&P also was a large food manufacturer. After two bankruptcies, A&P finally closed the last of its doors in 2015. On one edge it says: Frank Kraus, Los Angeles 36, which puts it before zip codes and during postal zones (1943-63). On the other edge it states the kit was made in West Germany, that puts it after WW II. Collectors are grabbing up items marked "U.S. ZONE" (1945 - 1949) & "WEST GERMANY" (1949 - 1990) just like they did items marked "OCCUPIED JAPAN" for the unique markings and the fact that the mark "dates" the item to post war Germany, prior to the reunification of Germany in 1990. Frank Kraus was an importer whose products included advertising promos like needle sets from West Germany to venders such as A&P Super Markets and Piggly-Wiggly among others. Last mention of his products is in the 1960's. This auction is for a very attractive piece of promotional advertising dating to around 1945 - 1960's. It is for a very handy and attractive sewing needle assortment that was a free give-away by the A&P Markets. Since home sewing was still very popular during this period, these needle sets were quite desirable for the ladies of that era. The set includes about 30 needles of assorted sizes and a needle threader, all in a very pretty organizer card. Condition: These sets are over 60 years old. They were found in Gramma's sewing box.
