Have you everseen 10,000 motorcycle enthusiasts gathered in one place?Where else in this world could you view these plus a 50 MileAmateur Race and a 25 Mile Novice event?There are hundreds of top events on the motorcycle calen-dar for rhe coming season but nowhere is there anything likethe 1953 Laconia. The dates are June 19, 20 and 21. It is pri-marily a gypsy tour—three days of fun and frolic for motor-cyclists from all parts of the U. S.The Belknap Mountain Recreation Area at Laconia, NewHampshire is a veritable rider’s heaven. June, when summerbegins, motorcycles and three days so packed with activity thatthere is little time for sleep. This, the vacation spot of NewEngland, is the setting for the greatest gypsy tour in the world.On the first day of rhe tour, Friday, June 19, there will beconducted tours through rhe scenic Green and White Moun-tains, rhe famous lakes, the Lost River and rhe Polar Caves.There will also be a cruise on beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee.The fourth annual motorcycle and accessory show in the Bel-knap Recreation Building will open to the attending riders.On Saturday, the motorcycle clubs will be judged for the bestuniformed group to lead the great cycle parade through the cityof Laconia where movies will be taken for a later showing ontelevision. Then, later that afternoon, the Novice Road Raceswill commence. There will be five, 5-mile heat races and a25 lap final on the famous circuit. This event was run for thefirst time last fall in conjunction with the National Class CHill Climb and proved to be exceptionally popular with con-testants and spectators alike. (See LACONIA, Page 33)LACON5A (From page 19)After the Novice Races are over and thetrophies awarded to the winners, the mam-moth sports program is scheduled to begin.This, probably the greatest field meet in theworld, is open to all riders and many valu-able cash, merchandise and trophy awardswill be offered. A girl rider will be selectedand named Miss Laconia Gypsy Tourist of1953. All attending girl riders are eligiblefor this title or that of runner-up. Thewinner must of course own and ride her ownmachine to the tour.Another girl rider, this one a resident ofNew England, will be crowned queen of thetour and will rein over all activities. Awardswill also be made to the fellow and galriding the longest distance to Laconia ontheir motorcycles.If you have a dependable antique, whynot try for the trophy offered to the riderattending the tour on the oldest motorcycle?To be eligible, you must ride the machineto the tour.That Saturday evening, trophies and otherawards will be made to the contest winnersof the afternoon’s games. This presenta-tion of awards will take place at the dancein the recreation building.All of these Friday and Saturday eventsdon’t cost you a nickel. They are absolutelyfree. Your motorcycle is your ticket.The climax of the week-end will be Sun-day afternoon when the sponsors of this supertour, the New England Motorcycle DealersAssociation, present the 100 mile NationalChampionship Road Race. Theyheld the undivided attention of the hugethrong that gathered to watch their progressthrough the trial.Even the weather was kind to the oldhands, for California’s skies have nevershown brighter on old timers, Hap Jones,Al Fergoda, Armando Magri, Maurice Atkin-son, Pappy Ford and others.Star of the day was Bill Meier who rodean Ambassador Supreme, a spring frame 200with Avon tires. Meier’s loss of onlyseven marks made him the big winner of theday. Nick Nicholson on a 500 BSA rateda good solid second with an eleven pointloss. Tying Nick for second was Ken Plain,Triumph.Among the oldtimers running, ArmandoMagri did the best.
