Description: SWINGING PAD FOR THE SQUARE BEATBob Denver, beatnik on CBS-TV's "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," may be the squarest beatnik you have ever heard of… but his pad is the swingingest. Former school teacher Bob and wife Maggie inhabit the only cabin in Beverly Hills. "Actually," says Bob, "we moved in on Lincoln's Birthday so it somehow seems appropriate that we chose a cabin. I mean, anything else would have been unpatriotic. To be frank," Denver confides, "it's really a goat shed--converted of course--but we don't like to mention it in front of the parrot, goldfish, or dog. You see the parrot thinks it's an aviary, the goldfish thinks it's an aquarium and the dog thinks it's a kennel." The Denver got-shed--er, cabin, that is, residence was actually rented to provide a home for the dog, named Annie. Annie is a miniature schnauzer which the Denvers saw in a pet shop, bought and brought home to the "no-pets-allowed" apartement they lived in last February. "Well, the landlord didn't dig the dog and we didn't dig a cat who didn't dig a dog, and the dog dug up the garden so we sought a more pastoral residence," says Bob. "And we found it. We have several acres, if you count the mountain in back of us, 40 giant Eucalypti left over from an old Victor Mature movie, plus one half acre of poison oak, untarnished by the sordidness of civilization. On moonlit nights you can see the rattlesnakes slithering through our log pile... which is one reason why we use leftover lumber in the fireplace. Why our place is so rustic," says Bob, "the mailbox is one half mile down the road. That's where we pick up the Marlboros the sponsor sends us. Can you imagine living in Beverly Hills and walking one half mile to the mailbox? The fans will never believe this. I'm almost ashamed to face them with the truth. Tell me," asks Bob, " do you think this will destroy the glamour of the industry? Will Zsa Zsa stand for it?" One of the first things the Denvers did when they moved in was to turn farmer. Maggie and Bob cultivated a small area near the cabin. "The SAG strike was on then," Bob explains, " and we decided to think positive. We grew a victory garden. It must have worked," he adds," because the strike's over."
