Description: NASA PROJECT MERCURY TRACKING STATION AT KANO, NIGERIA, 8x10, b&w, 1961 Size ~ 8" x 10"Original black & white photograph of the Project Mercury tracking station The building of this tracking station was completed in March 1961. Photograph taken shortly thereafter. NASA released the photo in 1961 or 1962. This tracking station was in use from 1961 until 1966. It was used in Project Mercury as well as Project Gemini. The Kano tracking station was decommissioned in 1966 following completion of Project Gemini. The words "Project Mercury Tracking Station at Kano, Nigeria' are typed on the front of the photograph. Rear of photograph has orange brownish tone residue (not sticky), possibly kept in an album at one time. This stripe is visible through to the front of the image, just below the typed title. Rear is not watermarked.Front: minor scuff marks noted. Photo paper is glossy. These tracking stations were essential to the success of the Mercury and Gemini missions.
