1964 Fender Jazzmaster Pre-CBS Vintage Guitar Sonic Blue w/ Case

Description: Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Jazzmaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. A rare custom color example, this guitar retains its original Sonic Blue nitro lacquer finish on the peghead and in the body cavities, with a body-only refinish by MB Guitars in aged Sonic Blue nitro lacquer (matching the original finish). The guitar retains all of the original electronics, hardware, and plastics, including the rare wide bevel mint green nitrate pickguard. Lightweight for a Jazzmaster at 8lbs 2oz, this Pre-CBS Fender has a clear, lively natural acoustic quality, and the pair of gray bobbin single coils both retain their original windings. The bridge pickup has a sparkling snap and rich, midrange-forward cut, while the neck pickup is woody and clear, offering more warmth and low end heft. The Rhythm Circuit on the lower body horn has a sound that's thick and sweet, well suited to a heavily overdriven tube amp or a vintage fuzz pedal. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've dialed in this Jazzmaster with 11-49 roundwound strings, low action, and accurate intonation. The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut with moderate shoulders and a gentle increase in additional chunk up the fingerboard, measuring .825" deep at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th. The dark Brazilian rosewood fretboard has rolled edges, clay dot inlay, and a 7 1/4” radius, refretted with flawless medium jumbo fretwire. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2" scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The new bone nut measures 1 5/8” in width (original nut is also included). On the Sonic Blue-finished headstock, the "spaghetti" Jazzmaster waterslide decal is fully intact atop the original lacquer, and the single line Kluson Deluxe tuning machines function smoothly with uniform surface patina on the plating. On the heel of the neck, the 4MAY64B stamp is extremely faint, translating to "4" (Jazzmaster model number), May, 1964. MB guitars has faithfully replicated the "paint stick" markings in the neck pocket, along with a couple original factory shims which both have flecks of original Sonic Blue lacquer on them. All of the electronics function as intended, and both pickups retain their original windings. One pickup bobbin is pencil dated 7/22/64, while the other has the small yellow inked date stamp only seen in '64. The Lead Circuit pots comprise a CTS Volume pot which dates to the 10th week of '64, and a Stackpole-made Tone pot which dates to the 21st week of the year. The original wide bevel mint green nitrate pickguard shows some shrinkage, yet still mounts cleanly and sits quite flat. The original pickup covers and knobs are also present. The hardware has bright chrome plating on the bridge base and vibrato, and the vibrato tailpiece is an elegant design, responding to a light touch for quick semitone flutters, surfy dives and deeper bends. The nitro lacquer Sonic Blue finish on the body has been extremely well executed by MB Guitars, with greening of the clear coat and a tasteful relic to match the original headstock finish. There is ostensibly no wear beyond the simulated aging on the body. The lacquer on the neck profile is original, with light overspray that has been largely worn through with light palm wear down to the bare maple on the profile shoulders. The original black tolex no-logo hardshell case is included, complete with functional latches and handle.
