Description: This is an original GM Big Block Chevy engine block with factory bolt main caps. The casting number is 3855962. The 3855962 block with 4 bolt mains was used exclusively on the following applications: 1965 Corvette L78 396/425HP, 1965 Chevelle Z16 396/375HP, 1966 Chevelle 396/360HP, and 1966 Chevelle 396/375HP. The casting date is C 15 5 which decodes as March 15th, 1965. Since the 396 engine was introduced part way through the 1965 model year, this is a VERY early 396 block. This "962" block is very hard to find since it was only made for high performance applications with 4 bolt mains. A different casting, 3855961, was used for 2 bolt main applications. To add to the rarity, only early blocks had the reinforcements above the timing cover and bellhousing flange areas which have become known as casting "fangs" to many in restoration circles. Finding one of these early 3855962 blocks not an easy task. Don't miss this true original early 396 4 bolt main block. This block is in good condition overall. I discovered it as a build 454 that was a backup engine for a flat bottom boat. It was a fresh short block that had a 454 crank. I removed the rotating assembly knowing whoever bought this block would likely want a 396/427 crank in it. The bore size is standard bore 427/454 as 4.250 inches. These 962 blocks are known for being very thick wall with many capable of going .100 over the 427/454 size to 4.350 inches. The block has been checked for cracks with none found. The bores all are very clean with no sleeves or pitting. There is no ridge at the tops of any cylinders. All main caps are original to this block and are the early design cap with "964" cast into them. The deck surfaces have been upgraded to o-rings for optimal sealing. The block was also clearanced for the longer stroke 454 crank which required pipe plugs to be installed on a few of the areas that cut through as shown. This is a very hard to find early 4 bolt block that could make your special car matching numbers. Don't Miss It!
