Description: Here we offer a 1967 Jefferson Nickel Five Cent Coin from a Special Mint Set. The Jefferson Nickel is a long running coin series that has seen very little change. Special Mint Sets were issued as partial substitutes for Proof Sets during the first 3 years of the transition from silver to clad coinage. SMS coins were of higher quality than regular circulation coins but were not polished and specially struck like Proofs. Officially the Mint said they wanted to free up coin presses to help meet the demand for clad coins as silver was withdrawn, but there was suspicion that they did not have the technology to strike proofs in clad metal because it's much harder than silver. Weight: 5 grams Content: 75% Copper 25% Nickel Diameter: 21.2 millimeters Edge: Plain Designer: Felix Schlag Mintage: 1,863,344* *This Proof mintage is for Special Mint Sets which contained specially prepared coins that were not quite up to Proof standards.
