Leo Meiersdorff (1934-1994) was an American-German painter best known for his Expressionist ink and watercolor drawings of jazz musicians. He was born in Berlin-Charlottenburg, Germany. After graduating from high school, he began pursuing an artistic career. In the late 1950s, Meiersdorff participated in a competition to design a record album cover for a well-known jazz musician as part of a cultural exchange program worldwide. He won the competition, which marked a turning point as it sparked his interest in the intersection of art and jazz. Meiersdorff settled in NYC by 1966 and painted large expressionistic pieces in oils and mixed media. He befriended jazz musicians and began focusing on painting jazz figures in watercolors. Around 1970, he moved to New Orleans, anchoring a career that has solidly identified him as a significant contributor to jazz--America's unique cultural contribution to the world. Meiersdorff's paintings grace the walls of iconic New Orleans restaurants, while imitators of his style can still be seen along the fence at Jackson Square in the heart of the French Quarter. He sold prolific artwork to galleries and individuals during the peak of his demand in the mid-1980s to early 1990s. Unfortunately, he had diabetes, which caused him to lose his eyesight. He passed away at the age of 59.
