Description: The American Monument - Lee Friedlander. New York: The Eakins Press Foundation, 1976, The reproductions of the photographs of "The American Monument" were printed at The Meriden Gravure Company from half-tone negatives made by Richard Benson. The cover and typography were designed by Lance Hidy. The text, set in Monotype Bell, was printed letterpress by Michael and Winifred Bixler. The album was bound by Robert Burlen & Son and published in an edition of 2000 copies. The binding of this exhibition album has been designed to allow the removal of pages for display. 77 pp (no pagination), 213 black-and-white reproductions, taped card from publisher found on front board, 12 x 17", folio. In fair condition. Cloth boards exhibit foxing & general soiling. Gilt ruling is slightly dulled, but black painted lettering bright and clean. Edges of boards are lightly scuffed, as well as head and tail of spine. Fore-edge of text-block and bottom corner exhibit age-staining, which bleeds onto a few pages, but does not inhibit photos. Publisher's card found taped onto front board at top corner: "The Eakins Press Foundation. Best regards, Al - (We're working on the legs for this.) Leslie." Foxing exhibited to both front and rear paste-downs and end-pages. Title page also exhibits some foxing around edges. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. Lee Friedlander (born 1934) is an American photographer and artist. In the 1960s and 1970s, Friedlander evolved an influential and often imitated visual language of urban "social landscape," with many of his photographs including fragments of store-front reflections, structures framed by fences, posters and street signs. His work is characterized by its innovative use of framing and reflecting, often using the natural environment or architectural elements to frame his subjects. This is a first edition & first and only printing. Photos remain clean and intact for possible framing and display. Gift quality. FORN-MSB-1223-0697-HK1028
