The way Honda’s engineers created room for four adults plus luggage inside the Honda Civic and Honda Civic CVCC was nothing less than brilliant. Especially when you consider that the outside dimensions of all models were kept to a minimum for easy driving and parking on crowded city streets. To make sure the Civic and Civic CVCC had enough interior space, our engineers designed the passenger compartment first. They provided sufficient leg room, hip room, and head room for four adults. And they made space for luggage behind the rear scat: nearly five cubic feet in the Sedan; more than eight cubic feet in the Hatchback. But our engineers didn’t stop there.To keep the interior as large as possible, they gave the cars a transverse-mounted engine and front-wheel drive. Mounting the engine sideways, instead of lengthwise, meant the overall length of the cars could be held to a minimum without reducing space in the front of the passenger compartment. Front-wheel drive eliminated the drive shaft as well as the bulky rear axle and differential. Without these items, the passenger compartment could be designed for maximum comfort. Of course, the outward appearance of the Civic or the Civic CVCC doesn’t begin to convey its interior roominess. So we hope you’ll see your Honda dealer soon for a test drive.
