Description: 1978 Tonga 1, 2, 5, 10 Paanga Banknote Uncirculated Specimen Set with COA "TongaTonga, the only remaining Polynesian kingdom, gained its independence in 1970 and issued the current banknotes during 1973.At first sight, the design on the front of all the notes seems to be the same - the engraved portrait of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV; the national coat of arms with its motto "God and Tonga are my inheritance"; and the deeply engraved border. But one major design element differs - the fine-line pattern at the center, incorporating the denomination. One distinctive feature of these banknotes is the way the basic color on the front is reflected on the back - but only in the border design.The design on the back of each banknote is a scene characteristic of the kingdom of Tonga. On the one-Pa'anga is a typical landscape, exemplifying the high quality of engraving achieved throughout the series in the clarity of individual trees and foliage. The creation of a tapa, a mat made from fibers of the mulberry tree, is depicted on the two-Pa'anga. The five-Pa'anga portrays a famous prehistoric monument, the trilithon. And on the remaining note is a beautiful engraving of the Royal Palace. Interestingly, Tonga's banknotes carry no watermark, a comparatively rara characteristic in modern national currencies.
