Nigeria had been a British colony and had used the Pounds and Shillings system until 1973 when they switched over to the Naira and Kobos system. This design was first issued in 1977 and had five signature combinations by 1984 when they changed the color slightly, added security features and started printing this type, beginning in 1984. This variety had 5 signature combinations by 2000 when they began putting dates on them. Those went through 4 more combinations and 6 dates until they introduced a completely new design in 2006.
