Ray Honisett (1931-2019) was Australia's premier stamp designer and an artist of international reputation. The creator of forty Australian stamps, he was a winner of the coveted International Philatelic Gold Medal and a Fellow of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. A native Australian, Honisett moved to England as a young man but returned to Australia in 1962 where he kept busy with his teaching, his painting and his extraordinary stamp designs. Ray Honisett was the leading war artist in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, producing paintings which showed scenes from the Korean War, Malayan Emergency, and Vietnam War, amongst others, usually of ships and/or aircraft. "This is one of sixteen paintings commissioned by the McDonnell Douglas Corporation as a Bicentennial gift to the Australian people in 1988. The paintings by Australia's leading aviation artist Ray Honisett of Melbourne depict significant moments in the history of Australian aviation.This painting, entitled 'Airborne' depicts J. R.
