Description: 2004 Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Proof Silver Dollar Coin & Pouch Set Your pouch was produced by: Errol Medicine / Roan Horse 11-03-03 of the Lakota Oyate, now known as Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, in the place now called the State of South DakotaAbout Your PouchThe pouch you have purchased is made of deer, elk or moose hide. It has been hand-decorated by a tribal artist using one or more of the following traditional methods: painted nature-inspired designs, fringe, pierced holes, pipe bone, horsehair or shells, porcupine quill embroidery, or bead work using glass seed beads which were originally introduced by European explorers and fur traders. Through early contact with traders and trappers, tribes began using thread instead of sinew, metal needles and awls instead of bone instruments, and glass beads instead of shells, quills or dyes to decorate clothing, containers and horse adornments. The artist used personal creativity in designing the decoration on your pouch. This type of construction, however, has been used for millennia and emulates full-sized containers for food storage, transport of goods or as a trade item. By the time Lewis and Clark explored the West, most tribes along the route had already engaged in trade for cloth, metal and glass objects. Before Lewis and Clark, Native peoples of North America used a widespread tanning process with local variations that continue today. Animal skins were prepared for use in multiple steps. The brains and sometimes the liver of the animal whose hide was being tanned were mashed into a paste then rubbed into both sides of the hide, or the hide was soaked in a solution of brains and water. Hides were stretched on a wooden frame or staked on the ground to prevent shrinkage and create a flat surface for scraping flesh and fat from the hide.If the hair was also to be removed, the hides were treated with wood ash and water, then stretched again and scraped to free the loosened hair. A hide finished in this way could be used as rawhide to create a parfleche or softened to velvety white buckskin. If the hide was smoked over a fire until it was a golden brown, it was more water repellent. Smoked hides retain a wonderful smoky aroma. The United States Mint recommends separating your Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar and your American Indian pouch for long-term storage. We do not know how the traditional tanning methods used in producing the pouches might affect the finish of your coin in a closed environment over a long period of time. Although the coin capsules are protective, they are not airtight. Same coins as pictured. 489
