Throughout the decades, Liberty’s appearance and poses changed to reflect a changing America. Although the representation of Liberty changed over time, the values she stood for did not. In 2015, the U.S. Mint introduced the American Liberty series which celebrates modern interpretations of the concept of American liberty. The obverse designs feature modern versions of Liberty, paired with contemporary eagle designs on the reverse. The American Liberty designs are released first as a 24-karat gold coin and then as a silver medal. The 2022 American Liberty medal explores the theme beyond the classical portraits of the allegorical figure of Liberty. The obverse, designed by artist Beth Zaiken features Liberty as a wild American Mustang horse, bucking off a western style saddle. It evokes the throwing off of the yoke of British rule during the American Revolution. The horse is centered on a rising sun. The interpretation is a bold representation of the determination and power of the passion for American liberty. Also included on the obverse are the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “2022”. The reverse of the medal depicts a close-up image of an eagle with an open beak along with the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and a “P” mint mark indicating the medal was struck in Philadelphia.
