The new quarters honor a diverse group of notable American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds. Wilma Mankiller is featured on the third coin released in this program. Wilma Mankiller was the first woman elected chief of the Cherokee Nation. Mankiller’s administration revitalized the Cherokee Nation through extensive community development, including improvements to health care and education. Mankiller’s leadership on social and financial issues made her tribe a national role model. After leaving office, she remained a strong voice worldwide for social justice, native people, and women. In her 1993 autobiography, she said she wanted to be remembered for emphasizing that Cherokee values can help solve contemporary problems. Mankiller received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. The reverse (tails) design depicts Wilma Mankiller with a resolute gaze to the future. The wind is at her back, and she is wrapped in a traditional shawl. To her left is the seven-pointed star of the Cherokee Nation. It was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Benjamin Sowards and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” “WILMA MANKILLER,” “PRINCIPAL CHIEF” and the name of the Cherokee Nation written in the Cherokee syllabary. This American Women Quarters Two-Roll Set – Wilma Mankiller contains single rolls of 40 uncirculated coins each, for a total of 80 coins in each set. They are minted at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The common obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate entry for the 1932 quarter, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. The inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2022.” 2022 WILMA MANKILLER 2-ROLL SET P & D AMERICAN WOMEN QUARTERS SET SOLD OUT AT THE US MINT (Item # 22WRE) ORIGINAL GOVERNMENT PACKAGING (OGP)   The 2022 Wilma Mankiller 2-Roll Set includes one Philadelphia Mint quarter roll of 40 coins and one Denver Mint quarter roll of 40 coins, for a total of 80 quarters.  This is the second quarter in the US Mint American Women Quarters program.  Some of the highlights of this two-coin set include:   Two-roll set of 2022 American Women Quarters honoring Cherokee Nation Chief Wilma Mankiller Coins minted at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints 80 coins in total with uncirculated finishes   The American Women Quarters Program is a four-year series celebrating the accomplishments and contributions made by women to the development and history of the U.S. Beginning in 2022, and continuing through 2025, the Mint is issuing five new quarters each year featuring reverse designs honoring a group of prominent American women.   The new quarters honor a diverse group of notable American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts.
