This featured specimen is one of a kind as it features a cluster of 3 minerals in one - 2 main large prehnite spheres like a “Twin”, and two additional small prehnite spheres attached to them, with multiple small clear prismatic quartz crystals lining the peripheral of the specimen front and center, and then surrounded by transparent to translucent calcites, taking on different formation habits from tabular to scalenohedrons, and intergrown rhombohedrons.The two main large prehnite spheres have a distinctive well-formed pattern of rounded groups of blocky rectangles and they have a very soothing light pastel green color tone. The largest prehnite sphere measures approximately 3 cm in size and the other main prehnite sphere is 2.5 cm! Very impressive indeed! Specimen Background information: Prehnite is named after Colonel Hendrik Von Prehn (1733–1785), a Dutch commander of the military forces of South Africa who brought Prehnite specimens from South Africa to Europe.Prehnites are composed of basic calcium aluminum silicate, sometimes with some iron. Their colors range from light green to dark green, mint-green, yellowish-green, brownish-green, and bluish-green. Rarely brown, yellow, orange, pink, gray, white, or colorless. They can be transparent to translucent and their luster varies from vitreous to waxy to pearly.Prehnite forms in both odd and distinct formation habits. These crystals are most often formed as rounded, bubbly globular masses. These rounded masses are usually composed of small saddle-shaped crystals or radiating balls. Commonly botryoidal, reniform, encrusting, stalactic, acicular, as rounded balls, and as finger-shaped formations. Individual crystals can sometimes be seen in rounded aggregates as curved wedge-shaped crystals or rounded groups of blocky rectangles as with this featured specimen.Quartz composition is silicon dioxide and in this featured specimen, they appear as prismatic and pointed aggregates. The other associated mineral is calcite. The calcite crystals in this featured specimen are composed of calcium carbonate and they appear as bundles of tabular, scalenohedron, and intergrown rhombohedron crystals.
