Description: This Vintage 50s Virginia Tech VPI VTCC Corps Of Cadets US Model 1902 Officers Saber / Sword is in good condition overall but does show modest signs of age and service. The blade's ricasso is well marked and reads "DEFENDER TRADEMARK N. S. MEYER INC." as well as what appears to be a "bend test" brass inlayed stamp on the reverse side. Etching on the blade appears to indicate production most likely took place in the late 1950s, the ricasso stamps seem to confirm this as well. Blades like this example that were imported by N. S. Meyer in the 50s and 60s were made by the famous Carl Eickhorn company in Solingen, Germany; a city long renowned for it's superior quality blades. The blade shows only mild evidence of age and handling as you would expect. The etching on this blade is of the finest quality and is truly a superior example of German craftsmanship. Near the ricasso of the blade on either side are the years 1872 and 1957, appearing to indicate the celebration of the 85th anniversary of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. One side of the blade depicts the Virginia State Seal, The school's motto, "Ut Prosim," on a torch, the seal and insignia of Virginia Polytechnic Institute as well as it's name. Of particular interest, just below the year "1872" there is a World War 2 style Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet insignia. The reverse side is detailed just as highly; the name of the previous owner (Carroll G. Mays) is etched just above the ricasso, crossed cannons and rifles are depicted framing a scene of what appears to be the school's campus, above that is the American Eagle and finally the US Flag and the motto "E Pluribus Unum." The black plastic grips are in good condition however each side has noticeable cracks near the pommel end. A few other mild signs of age can also be observed but they still display well. The scabbard is in good, clean condition however there are a few noticeable areas of finish loss and wear from storage. The blade fits in the scabbard and is easily removed, only a light amount of tension holds it in place. The belt hanger is in very good condition and is clearly marked "SPARTAN" and "FRANCE." All associated hardware is clean and functions exactly as you would expect. This fine blade would a welcome addition to any advanced edged weapons collection and would be difficult to upgrade. Please examine the photographs carefully for the best description of contents and condition.
