Description: **Please Note: I am not permitted to sell this item to mainland China. Extraordinary 19th century Anglo-Indian carved sandalwood stationery/letter box, hexagonal shape, made in India circa 1870. Intricate all-over relief carvings feature a palace or temple surrounded by exotic birds and other animals, among flowers and foliage. Bottom surface features a layer of black felt. The exterior is in good vintage condition, with a small chip at each front corner of the base, as shown. In the interior, there is a crack, as shown, on the floor of the box, which is not visible from the outside. The interior features two compartments for letters; two wood slats for additional, smaller compartments are missing, however the space allows for the storage of trinkets and mementos instead. There is evidence that repairs were made to the box at some point. Box includes original key, but the lock does not appear to function. Dimensions: 5" high x 9" wide x 6 1/2" deep
