Hungarian-born conductor Antal Doráti became music director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in 1949 and quickly transformed it into a world-class orchestra. Mercury continued to record together from 1952 until 1960, when Dorati resigned, making 51 albums (24 in mono and 27 in stereo). There remains what he built with the orchestra during the 11 years he served as music director. Newly remastered from the original by Thomas Fine, son of Mercury's longtime Chief Engineer Robert Fine and Producer Wilma Cozart. It opens with Stravinsky's fiery Firebird and ends with two contemporary Hungarian works: the incomparably talented Kodaly's Peacock Variations and Bartok's sensational Chinese Mysterious Official. . The three ballets of Tchaikovsky by Dorati, who is highly regarded as a ballet director, are also noteworthy. The legendary overture "1812" is an original recording with the "making of" narration by Deems Taylor. Taylor has also narrated Britten's "Introduction to Orchestral Music for Youth" and Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker Suite. There are also three unusual musical stories narrated by Jerry Terheyden. The last two albums are with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
