Hunter carefully renders in oil paint the vivid details of the figures and the fishing boats/buildings in the background, showing a mastery of the medium. This work is a particularly fine example of Hunter’s depictions of life along the Scottish coast. Hunter’s auction record for a single painting is $21,398, which was set at Lyon & Turnbull in 2006. The work is oil on canvas and is housed in a beautiful gilt wood and gesso frame. It is signed in the lower left. Born in Glasgow, he developed a passion for sketching from nature during his youth in Helensburgh. Initially a clerk in a shipping office, Hunter's love for art led him to study landscape painting with Milne Donald. At twenty, he transitioned to become a full-time artist, maintaining a unique style despite brief studies in Paris under Leon Bonnat. Hunter's talent flourished, earning him recognition with his first notable work, "Taking in the nets," exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. His dedication and skill earned him an Associate Membership with the Royal Academy in 1884. Notably, he showcased almost a hundred paintings at Universal Exhibitions across Berlin, Vienna, and Philadelphia from 1886 to 1891. Residing primarily in Kensington's Melbury Road, Hunter was a central figure among prominent artists of his time. His art studio, a hub for celebrated painters, was frequented by luminaries like Lord Leighton, George Frederic Watts, and Luke Fildes. Hunter's artistic focus centered on picturesque seascapes and vibrant fishing villages along the Scottish coast. His captivating works extended to Ireland, Cornwall, and Devon, with a journey to New York yielding an iconic depiction of the majestic Niagara Falls. Condition: Very good overall condition. Stable surface craquelure commensurate with age. Frame with typical wear and small losses from handling. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed!
