Description: Unique antique barbotine majolica vase with applied flowers in high relief. I'm sure it dates to the late 19th century, and although it's unmarked except for the small incised number "174," I'm also sure it must be French in origin. The background color is an unusual royal blue color with visible brushstrokes and a high-gloss glaze, and the applied flowers are in all different colors on brown stems with green leaves. This vase is 9" tall and 4" in diameter across the base, about 8" across the widest point in the middle. The relief work is very elaborate and is up to 3" high in some places(!), so with its age and the soft nature of this type of clay there is some breakage. The only large area is where the stem is broken on one side of the piece ...it looks like there should be another area of stem connecting the existing stem and leaves (photo #2), like it appears on the other side; but if you turn the vase around for display you won't even notice it. There are also small chips and fine cracks here and there on the petals and leaves, it looks like some of them may even have been repaired, but it's hard to tell because there is so much going on and it all looks very natural. When you feel the fragile molding of the flowers you will wonder how it survived as well as it has! There are no chips or cracks to the actual body of the piece; besides the damage to the applied work there is only scuffing or shallow flaking on the foot. Also, since the flowers are so deep, there is some dirt and dust inside them...so I would recommend a cleaning using a q-tip or small instrument to get in there. This piece came from an estate here on the Gold Coast of Long Island, and it will not disappoint any European majolica lover! It displays beautifully! Please note: this piece is heavy and will require very, very careful packing so a 14" square box is required and a dimensional shipping charge will apply.
