Description: Beautiful hand carved solid-wood Anglo-Indian elephant, likely made in the late 1800s. Please see pics, you will receive exactly what is shown. An extraordinary piece of art featuring hundreds of inlay pieces . Elephant is very large and weighs over 35 pounds - it bottoms out my scale at 32 pounds. Measures 18 inches high, 20 inches deep, and 14 inches across. It is almost certainly made from the most exotic and rare of native Indian woods due to its weight and density. The elephant is an estate find from a former Broadway actress that was married to a producer. This producer arranged and escorted a tour for Albert Schweitzer to India and China in 1946. The elephant was apparently purchased on that tour. I have no way to confirm this information, it is only what I was told by the estate. I did confirm that Albert Schweitzer did indeed visit China and India in the late 1940s. For what it’s worth. Body shows some cracking, which is actually an indication of its true age from the 19th century, and not a recent reproduction. No carved inlay pieces are missing, but a few trim bits are gone. I am including detailed photographs. This piece will be very carefully packed, well padded and double boxed for safe delivery. Similar pieces to this one sell for hundreds or even thousands more than the price this one is being offered at. Thanks and enjoy.
