Description: Antique G.W.M.A. Volkmar Washington Memorial Association Plaque Hanging Plate Hard to find stoneware from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. By Volkmar, this is a Commemorative plate designed to be hung on a wall, & made for the George Washington Memorial association. Presumably it depicts a scene from Newburgh, New York. The plate measures about 11 inches in diameter and is in very good condition for its age. The front has crazing throughout and several areas of imperfections that were part of the process and not in our opinion damage that happened after. There are imperfections in the glaze. The front of the plate has a navy border and G. W. M. A. At the top of the plate at the bottom is a sword and wreath. In the middle, there is a depiction of a building, possibly a home set in a field near mountains and with trees in the foreground. The back of the plate shows some blue dye on the rim that looks like it happened during the manufacture. “Newburg, N.Y.” is written on the back under the glaze. Additionally, “Volkmar” is stamped into the center of the plate. There is a small chip to the rim on the back of the plate. We note a small amount of what looks like clay very close to where the Volkmar stamp is. We are not able to determine if this was part of the original plates, manufacture, or something that appeared later. We see no other chips, cracks or damage. The prior owner attached a plate hanger and there is wire going from one side to the other to hang additionally. This plate will be sent with those items still attached as we do not want to take the chance of damaging anything by removing it. Please review all photos carefully as part of the description.
