Description: This spectacular Japanese fan is meticulously hand painted on a double paper leaf with a central cartouche of a charming rural scene with two men fishing under willow trees and a village in the distance. The red ground is overpainted with thin leaf outlines in silver paint. The reverse of the fan has a red ground painted with the outline of a stream, tree, leaves, birds, and clouds in silver paint. The 30 bamboo sticks are lacquered black and the two guards are decorated in brown paint with crosshatch and grasses. The brass loop is missing its tassel. The fan is large: 14 1/4" in length and 26" wide when fully opened. This fan is part of a collection of antique Japanese fans given to us to sell for the benefit of our library. Very good vintage condition. Colors are bright and lacquered sticks are in excellent condition. Light wear on the fan folds; two folds are separating (see photos). The silver paint on the fan leaf is oxidizing.
