The rooster on top signifies that this was made for use at a "hatsu-gama," the first (major) tea ceremony of the year. In this case, the year of the rooster. Pieces like this were also given by hosts of these tea gatherings to close friends attending and to peers who bring gifts. Stands 2-3/4" tall by 2-3/4" wide, very unusual and hard-to-find piece.
