Description: Antique Meissen Porcelain Hand Painted Quatrefoil Plate or Shallow Bowl of Watteau Courting Couples and Flowers. 9.25 inches dia x 1.5+ inches high, c. 1850-1924. Round scalloped shape. Alternating quarters of Watteau courting couples and flower groups hand painted in color enamels in very fine quality with center flower and quarter dividers of gilt scrolling by hand meeting an elaborate gilt by hand border and gilt rim edge. Blue underglaze by hand crossed swords with pommels of Royal Meissen Manufactory in use from 1850 to 1924. Two incised lines across the mark indicating factory second choice whiteware but with Meissen decoration. (The plate or shallow bowl sits very slightly unevenly on the foot rim, thus accounting for the less than perfect second choice-and of little matter. The painting is of the highest quality. A single line across the mark is indicative of a piece sold white by Meissen and thus decorated elsewhere). Fine clean condition. No chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs.
